On Sunday, September 23, 2012, the Lord quietly came in to take our dearly beloved Hazel Yvonne Newberry Clay, to her heavenly home. Hazel, affectionately referred to as “Vonnie”, “Hazie”, “Sista”, was born on July 15, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late William Daniel and Emma Chavis Newberry. She was the youngest of eight children. Hazel was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System, and received her undergraduate degree from Benedict College in Columbia, SC, and her master's degree from Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA.

Hazel was preceded in death by a brother and seven sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 25 years, Samuel David Clay; stepson, Troy D. Clay; sister, Louise Pickett, of Philadelphia, PA; sisters-in-law, Betty C. Reid, of Roanoke, Elaine C. Diggs, of Monterey, CA and Joanne (Edward) Walton, of Arvada, CO; brothers-in-law, Benjamin (Jeanetta) Clay, Calvin (Pamela) Clay, Alvin (Patricia) Clay, all of Roanoke and Charles (Silverine) Clay, of Stafford, VA; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, other family and many “special caring” friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2012, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Carl Tinsley officiating and the Rev. Rolando Twine, Eulogist.
